Dr. Gloria Beam, MD

Dr. Gloria Beim, MD is a sports medicine specialist and orthopaedic surgeon in Colorado.
She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and completed her residency at Columbia/New York Orthopaedic Hospital. She was then fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh under the renowned sports medicine pioneer Dr. Freddie Fu. She was the first woman ever accepted into the program.
Dr. Beim moved to Crested Butte, Colorado in 1996. Soon thereafter, she founded Alpine Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, which has locations in Crested Butte, Gunnison, and Telluride. In 2006, she also opened Alpine Surgery Center in Gunnison, CO.
From the Pittsburgh Ballet and University football team to the Winter X Games and US Ski and Snowboard Teams, Dr. Beim has been working with professional teams and providing medical direction at elite athletic events around the world for the past 25 years.
Dr. Beim began working with the United States Olympic Committee in 2002. In 2004, she attended her first Olympic Games, where she was a physician for Team USA in Athens. She served in this role at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she was Venue Medical Director.
Dr. Beim was Chief Medical Officer for the 2005 Summer World University Games in Turkey, the 2011 Pan-Am Games in Mexico, the 2012 BMX World Championships in England, the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, the 2015 ParaPan Games in Toronto, the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, and the 2018 Paralympics in PyeongChang. She also traveled the world with USA Cycling, for whom she was the Team Physician for 15 years.
In recent years, Dr. Beim served as Team Physician at the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo and the 2022 Paralympics in Beijing. She is also Head Team Physician for both the US National Wheelchair Basketball Association and Western Colorado University’s NCAA Sports program.
Dr. Beim has delivered hundreds of lectures and is well-published in medical journals with a focus on athletic injuries. She authored The Female Athletes Body Book; has been featured on 9News, NBC News, Fox News, The Today Show, and Dateline NBC; and was the commencement speaker for Western Colorado University in 2019.
